Biography

Giuliano Crivelli was born in Novara in 1935.

His activity has always been divided between painting and music: he studied painting in the 1950s with M. Nino di Salvatore; he began studying the violin at a very young age at the Brera Institute in Novara and gave birth to various musical groups, ranging from classical music to jazz.
“… Drawing or painting an image is basically an act of writing in which previously unknown meanings are opened; they arise from experiences and events that never come back….
However, there are facts and emotions that still want to live, even if many rests inactive within us. In my case, it is the two apparently different artistic expressions, such as figurative and musical art that take substance and concreteness on canvas and paper.
… With the conviction it made no sense to distinguish between abstract and figurative, already in the 1950s I made my own the emotion that came to me in front of the paintings of the “figurative” Pirandello and Vespignani, while I was startled and amazed at seeing works of Veira da Silva, Afro and Vedova, up to the shocking encounter with the works of Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline.
The existential estrangement of metropolitan life generated vital substance to my artistic work. Never thinking of doing something meanly imitative, I entrusted my every attempt to the resources that nature abundantly gave me every day: earth and water, fire, sky and wind that I used extensively in representing the rapidly alienating aspects of change in the world, weaving my warp, my texture of images … ”
